A recent study from Japan has confirmed what researchers have suspected for the last 20 years. There is a direct link between Type 2 diabetes and dementia. In a study from Europe a diabetic diet helped save the brain cells of people with the beginning stages of Alzheimer's disease. Apparently diabetes and dementia are linked due to the fact that blood sugar is directly related to the functioning of the brain cells. This is very important information for those who have loved ones who suffer from the memory robbing illness
Diabetics were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia as their brain cells are deprived of oxygen thus damaging brain cells. Diabetes is a punishing illness that can starve the cells of the body from receiving oxygen. Cells that are not receiving appropriate oxygen may not survive or may dysfunction. This raises the risk of Alzheimer's disease because the brain is deeply affected by high blood sugar. An important note is that even those who did not have diabetes still may have a blood sugar impairments(insulin) that can cause the loss of brain cells and memory. This means many with Alzheimer's may benefit from a diabetic diet.
Diabetes and Dementia : How diet may save the brain
A study from New Castle showed that a specialized diabetic diet improved the memory of study participants. Brain imagining showed that oxygen was improved to the brain and reversed many of the signs of Alzheimer's disease. All 33 participants in the study showed brain and memory improvements. The rise in Alzheimer's disease and Type 2 diabetes has caused a crisis in the medical establishment. Both illnesses are shortening lifespans and the prediction is that the numbers of people suffering will increase largely. The study showed that the earlier the illnesses are address the better the chance of reversing the damage to the brain and body. The specialized diabetes diet in the study that improved memory in those with Dementia was shown
